F1 2026 rule changes explained: Formula 1 teams and stakeholders have unanimously decided to make engine optimizations to improve racing efficiency and safety. The new guidelines are set to come into effect from May 3rd at the Miami Grand Prix. The sport has entered a new era, with hybrid power units now split roughly half between electric and internal combustion power.
Some drivers have complained in the first three races about having to “lift and coast” in high-speed corners to allow the combustion engine to charge the battery, and have raised safety concerns about the start and speed differences during the race.
Max Verstappen had questioned his future in F1
They also had to contend with “super-clipping,” where the drive unit automatically diverts energy from the engine to the battery, slowing the car even when the driver is fully on the accelerator. Red Bull’s four-time world champion Max Verstappen has questioned his future in the sport. The governing International Automobile Federation (FIA) said a series of in-season “refinements” had been agreed at an online meeting with the 11 team bosses, power unit CEOs and Formula 1, which will now be voted on virtually.
“The proposals agreed today… will be implemented from Miami, with the exception of changes to the race start, which will be tested in Miami and adopted following feedback and analysis,” it said.
The FIA said energy management parameters would be adjusted for qualifying, a key area of concern, with the maximum allowable boost reduced from eight to seven megajoules to promote smoother full-throttle driving and the “superclip” peak power increased from 250kW to 350kW to reduce the time spent recharging. Measures were introduced in the race to reduce excessive closing speeds and limit sudden power differences, with the maximum available power limited by boost to an additional 150 kW. A new system has been developed and is being trialled to reduce the risk of a slow starting car being hit by a faster vehicle directly behind and to take measures to improve safety and visibility in wet conditions.
“These are sensible changes and the teams, the FIA and Formula 1 have done a good job over the last few weeks to agree them,” Williams boss James Vowles said on social media.
“Formula 1 has seen some great racing so far this year, but it is right that we are always looking for ways to improve.”
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff had previously told reporters Changes must be made “with a scalpel and not a baseball bat” and warned against badmouthing the sport in public.
Formula 1: How will the above changes help?
The extent to which the latest changes will be effective will only become clear after several races on different types of tracks. The core challenge remains to generate almost half of the car’s power from a relatively small battery, and mid-lap energy management will continue to be crucial, particularly when the battery is depleted and superclipping occurs.
The qualifying laps are expected to be slower due to less recoverable power, which will impact the energy available for acceleration, particularly on long straights. Reducing the energy achievable per qualifying lap by 12.5% could address some of the drivers’ concerns from the first three races. However, to achieve the desired effect, the FIA may need to further lower the recharge limit on energy-limited tracks.
In racing, the new 150kW boost cap is intended to mitigate the approach speeds that contributed to Bearman’s accident, in which he was running on full boost while Franco Colapinto’s Alpine was running without battery backup. By restricting the use of 350 kW power to designated overtaking zones, the aim is to prevent significant approach speeds in dangerous areas of the route. Formula 1’s aim is to maintain the dynamic overtaking maneuvers of the first three races – often described as yo-yo racing – and this should remain the case despite the adjustments.
