Ben Williamson, assistant director of public affairs at the FBI, addressed the situation directly: “We are still receiving inquiries about this: This is not new evidence or information. The FBI asked to test this DNA two months ago using the same technology we always had – when the local sheriff sent it to a private lab instead. We will communicate any further developments as quickly as possible.”
Authorities also found that previous DNA samples either did not match entries in the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) or were mixed with another person’s genetic material.

Former CIA officer and FBI special agent Tracy Walder explained the importance of forensic testing in such investigations in an interview with Elizabeth Vargas Reports.
“We need that information to be able to rule out or exclude people in this case. In a case like this, where we really don’t have a lot of digital forensic evidence, which the FBI is obviously very good at, that becomes really, really important,” Walder told NewsNation.
“We clearly have a lack of forensic video evidence, as we’ve seen, as well as phone and forensic evidence of that nature, and I think there’s no question in this case that hair is going to be important in deciding who’s in or out, and the FBI will probably have to investigate to see if they can figure out who it is,” she added.
